The Hippo Pod: Tamara

In this podcast, Employer Brand and Employee Engagement Manager, Tannum, talks about Golden Hippo’s exciting and unique company culture with the people who know it best. This episode, we spoke with Tamara, who has been at Golden Hippo for 1.5 years and is 1 of 6 Quality Assurance Analysts in the customer care department. She was the second Quality Assurance Analyst hired and one of the first people to mold the department into what it is today.

Here are some of the highlights of Tannum and Tamara’s conversation:

What does a typical day look like for you?

I evaluate the recorded calls of customer service agents to make sure they’re following policies and procedures. I do about 19 of those a day, and then send the information to their supervisor so they can be coached appropriately. It seems simple, but it involves a lot of intense conversation. It’s all about perspective, so it’s super exciting to see everyone explain their point of view. I also started Tammy’s Tips, where I help agents pass their evaluation and the supervisors love it!

How would you describe our company culture to a candidate?

Our company culture is motivating, fun, collaborative, rewarding, and understanding. I love that Golden Hippo is big on mental health. A lot of people overwork themselves, and I love that Golden Hippo is big on taking mental health seriously and not overworking you. I always say that you can't be anything to anyone unless you're anything to yourself, and you can't pour from an empty cup. I'm happy to be a part of a company that understands that. The interview process is what made me fall in love with the company. I have locks, and I covered my hair up for my interview because I didn’t know how the company would feel about my hair. Only to have my last interview be with a Black man with locks! After that, I never covered my hair again.

You’ve been such a powerful voice for diversity at Golden Hippo. As a Black woman, how has the company shown you inclusivity?

I'm able to be myself. I don't feel out of place, and everybody has been so welcoming. My first day didn't feel like a first day. I didn’t know that I'd be able to share my voice on social media outlets, so I really feel like people care about what I have to say. I'm happy about the way Golden Hippo represents everybody, not just the Black community.

If you could give job seekers one piece of advice, what would it be?

Focus less on having a good resume. A good resume is important, however, you have to know how to sell yourself in an interview. Don’t just list the experiences you have if you cannot articulate what you contributed and accomplished in those positions.
