The Hippo Pod: Kip
In this podcast, Employer Brand and Employee Engagement Manager, Tannum, talks about Golden Hippo’s exciting and unique company culture with the people who know it best. This episode, we spoke with Kip, who has worked at Golden Hippo for 4 years and was recently promoted to Director of eCommerce - Amazon.
Here are some of the highlights of Tannum and Kip’s conversation:
What’s your Golden Hippo story? How did you start your career here?
I started at Amazon with their office products team, so I learned how to be successful on Amazon from their perspective. Since leaving, I was brought into Golden Hippo to build out their Amazon business. We wanted to create a pet food brand that would only be sold on Amazon, which was the impetus for hiring me. Over the years, I’ve been able to prove Amazon’s value to the company. I’ve now grown from having 1 brand under me to having twelve, and from being just me to a team of 5.
What does a typical day look like for you? From start to finish.
One of the things I love about working here is that most days are extremely different. The first thing I do when working remotely is log in and look at our different Amazon accounts and business from the day before. I then prepare for my meetings for the day. I also love the flexibility - I start early in the morning and will find time in the afternoon to work out before checking back in with my team so see if they got done what they were focusing on for the day. In-the-office days are very different. They’re a lot more about connecting in-person and talking through challenges.
How would you describe our company culture to a candidate?
It is a small company feel within a big company. It is a very fun place to work. Every meeting could be interrupted by a hilarious moment or comment, no matter how serious it is, and then we’ll dive back into the topic. Everyone has a real opportunity - not only to advance but to have their voice heard. It’s a very transparent, open, and fun place to work! We still do expect big results and we do work really hard.
If you could give job seekers one piece of advice, what would it be?
If you're in an unhappy situation or in a toxic work environment, keep your head up and know that there’s so much that goes into hiring and what a company is looking for in a candidate. If you don’t get a role that you thought you were fit for, it doesn’t reflect on you as a person but rather on the unique needs of the company or role. You will end up in a place where you’re happier and will find a role that is right for you.
