The Hippo Pod: Meghan

In this podcast, Employer Brand and Employee Engagement Manager, Tannum, talks about Golden Hippo’s exciting and unique company culture with the people who know it best. This episode, we spoke with Meghan, who has been at Golden Hippo for 6 months and is currently the Director of Direct Partnerships, working directly with external partners.

Here are some of the highlights of Tannum and Meghan’s conversation:

Can you give us an overview of the partnerships team?

The partnerships team consists of a few departments: business development, direct buy, and the affiliate team. We also just launched the international department. We work with all of our partners externally to promote our suite of brands. When we work with different agencies with expertise in different fields, we can really elevate our brands and level up our marketing.

How did you start your career at Golden Hippo?

I knew I wanted to work in marketing when I graduated college, but I wasn’t sure what industry. I randomly applied to a job in the direct response space and worked my way up. I’ve worked in various positions, but my favorite has been working in the health space.

When I found Golden Hippo, I was on my own doing a lot of consulting work and although I loved it, it was a difficult place to be in. I was looking for something with more stability to help take me to the next stage of my life. I was at a conference in September and had a meeting with Hannah from Business Development. I had known about Golden Hippo for years having been in the industry. When I told Hannah I was interested in working here, she passed along my resume and the partnerships team made the position for me even though they weren’t hiring at the time.

As a remote employee, what does your typical day look like?

My morning isn’t very exciting- I have my coffee to get going. I typically look at how campaigns have been performing over the last week, statistics, and performance. A lot of what goes into what the direct buy team does is negotiation. We are always looking for discounts and what we can do to try new things to meet our performance goals. It’s a tough place to be in sometimes. What I like about it is waking up in the morning and celebrating each other's successes. I usually have most of my meetings in the afternoons and evenings. Being remote gives me a lot of flexibility which I love with my young family, but it really is on you to meet as many people as possible and get a feel for the people at a human level. It makes collaboration a lot easier.

How would you describe Golden Hippo’s culture to a candidate?

You can see all the awards the company has won on the website, but once you’re here, you can really understand it. Those awards have been earned and are there for a reason. It’s a really special place to be. I’ve never had the Sunday Scaries, I enjoy getting up and working every morning. I enjoy furthering the business, which in turn furthers all of us. In addition to having that flexibility and work-life balance, Golden Hippo, both financially and medically, has fantastic benefits for their employees. The experience is really what you make of it.

What advice would you give to jobseekers?

If you are a job seeker, take out a piece of paper and write down all of the industries you find attractive. In the other column, write the job function, what has piqued your interest. What you then want to do is find positions that marry the two. That’s what I did when I was first starting my career. Go out and talk to people in those fields to determine if it’s an avenue you want to pursue.
