The Hippo Pod: Itzel
In this podcast, Employer Brand and Employee Engagement Manager, Tannum, talks about Golden Hippo’s exciting and unique company culture with the people who know it best. This episode, we spoke with Itzel, who has been at Golden Hippo for 5 months as a Video Editor. Having previously been in a career in TV Broadcasting, shifting to the digital environment was a big change for her.
Here are some of the highlights of Tannum and Tamara’s conversation:
What’s your Golden Hippo story? How did you start your career here?
I had a vision board and was looking for leadership, teamwork, marketing, photography, things like that. I was searching for jobs and when I found Golden Hippo, I read about the amenities and benefits. I was looking to work for a variety of products, and that’s what interested me about Golden Hippo. After looking for jobs and starting the hiring process, I got hired after my second interview. I like working for a corporation instead of as a freelancer because I like being around people.
What does a typical day look like for you? From start to finish.
I work remotely, and one of the positive things about working from home is that I can start working right after breakfast. I start my day editing - looking for footage, music, scripts, and communicating with my coordinator and writers. After that, we do testing and then upload those final clips to social media. The process took me about 2 weeks at the beginning, but I’m getting faster as I go.
How would you describe our company culture to a candidate?
I was looking for a company that looks for the human side of people, not just working machines. To me, that’s the most important thing when you’re working at a corporation. Accessibility, teamwork, those are the things I was looking for and I was so lucky to find Golden Hippo. I’ve felt so comfortable working here since day 1. I have support from my teammates, and everyone is really nice. I love it here, and hopefully I can stay for a long time.
If you could give job seekers one piece of advice, what would it be?
First, be patient when you’re looking for a job. Second, be good to yourself even when you’re frustrated. And lastly, repetition. Even if you’re sad or frustrated that you didn’t get a position, you have to wake up every morning and repeat the process. Even if you don’t like it, don’t give up. You’re in the middle of a storm so keep moving and doing the same thing. And don’t forget to pamper yourself - after you’ve spent a couple hours a day searching for jobs, make sure you’re investing in yourself.
